Here at Scissor & Stone we are on a journey to becoming a zero waste salon with the love and support of Sustainable Salons Australia. We have been working with SSA over the last few years to help reduce our daily salon waste by 95%... That's right, 95%!
Getting to know Sustainable Salons Australia
Sustainable Salons Australia is a not for profit organisation that was created to help salons, just like ours, all around Australia take control of their waste and recycling. These guys make it really easy for us to keep ourselves in check when it comes to what we are recycling with our 5 bins that divide our waste by material; hair, metals, paper, plastics and chemical. SSA collect our salon waste once a fortnight and sell these materials on to be recycled. The profits that they make from these recycled resources are then donated to Ozharvest to provide meals for hungry Aussies!
Here is a few ways our waste is recycled:
- Our excess chemicals (bleach and hair colour) are neutralised and turned into recycled water, avoiding being tipped down the drain and contaminating our waterways.
- Our hair clippings are stuffed into hair booms (AKA hairy sponges) to help clean up oil spills in the Great Barrier Reef.
- Our plastics are recycled into outdoor furniture and underground NBN protection sheets.
- Ponytails 20cm or longer are donated to SSA to create wigs for kids living with cancer or alopecia!
What this means for you!
You'll have peace of mind knowing that when you are in the salon you are helping us to do our part for the environment and that all the waste generated during your visit will be going towards good causes.
To help keep Sustainable Salons Australia going we have always added a $2 Green Fee to the cost of all our services that gets donated directly to SSA. As times are changing, Sustainable Salons Australia will be changing their Green Fee policy to $3 to cover the costs of keeping their NFP running.
It's a small fee that we know will make a huge difference. We understand this may be inconvenient for some clients, but the reward for helping our planet will overall outweigh the inconvenience of this small cost.
